Rules of thumb
- Ceiling height is usually 10 ft floor to floor, giving about 9.5 ft clear.
- Doors: 3 ft 3 in for the main door, 3 ft for bedrooms, 2 ft 6 in for toilets. Windows should be at least one-tenth of the floor area for daylight.
- A room longer than twice its width feels like a corridor. Keep bedrooms close to square.
- Allow 2 ft of wardrobe depth on one wall in every bedroom.
- Every plan in this library was checked against these minimums: bedrooms at least 9 ft wide, toilets at least 4 ft, kitchens at least 7 ft, car bays at least 9 × 14 ft.
Local rules often set minimums too (for example, a habitable room of at least 9.5 m² / about 100 sq ft in many Indian bylaws). Your architect will check these for approval.
