Moving timeline

| 1 week before | Update your address with the bank, gas agency, school and employer. Arrange internet installation for moving day. Pack an essentials box for each person. |
| Moving day | Be at both homes for the hand-over. Check the inventory as items are loaded and unloaded. Take meter readings at the old house. |
| First week | Unpack the kitchen and bedrooms first. Note any construction snags and send the list to your contractor while they are still on call. |
Checks for a newly built house
- Let the paint and floors cure. Fresh paint needs a few days to dry fully, and polished floors should not take heavy furniture for at least a week.
- Run every tap and flush. Look for leaks under sinks and on the ceiling below toilets before your things are in place.
- Test all switches and sockets. Check the earthing, and make sure the inverter or backup supply is wired to the right circuits.
- Clear construction dust. Clean the overhead tank and run water through all lines before you drink it.
- Fit curtain rods and fans first. Drilling is easier in empty rooms than after furniture arrives.
Packing tips
- Label every box with the room name from your floor plan (Master Bed, Kitchen, Bedroom 2) so the movers can place it straight away.
- Keep heavy items in small boxes and light items in large ones.
- Photograph TV and computer wiring before you unplug them.
- Carry jewellery, documents and medicines yourself.
- In the rainy season, ask for waterproof wrapping on mattresses, sofas and electronics.
